WASHINGTON, August 21 (RIA Novosti) – The US authorities are not planning to release details on the recent operation, aimed at rescuing American citizens held captive by the Islamic State militants in Syria, the Assistant to the US President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism said.

“Given the need to protect our military’s operational capabilities, we will not be able to reveal the details of this operation,” Lisa Monaco told journalists early on Thursday.

According to the US Department of Defense, the United States has recently made an attempt to rescue hostages, held by the Islamic State against their will in Syria. The operation, however, failed as the hostages were not present, Pentagon said in a statement.

Monaco elaborated that President Barack Obama gave the green light to the operation and “could not be prouder of the US forces, who carried out this mission.”

“Their effort should serve as another signal to those, who would do us harm that the United States will not tolerate the abduction of our people, and will spare no effort to secure the safety of our citizens and to hold their captors accountable,” Monaco stressed.

President Obama announced earlier on Wednesday that the United States would continue its campaign against the IS militants even despite their threats and the alleged execution of US journalist James Foley.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Islamic State militant group, formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), released a video purportedly featuring the beheading of journalist Foley in revenge for US airstrikes against its militants in Iraq.
