WASHINGTON, August 20 (RIA Novosti) – The United States will continue its campaign against the Islamic State militants despite their threats and the execution of American journalist James Foley, US President Barack Obama announced Wednesday.

"The United States of America will continue to do what we must do to protect our people, we will be vigilant and we will be relentless. When people harm Americans anywhere we do what is necessary to see that justice is done,” Obama said in a televised address.

“The groups like ISIL have no place in the 21st century,” the US President added.

The Islamic State militant group, formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) released Tuesday a graphic video online, showing the alleged execution of journalist Foley, taken prisoner by armed men in Syria in 2012.

The militant featured in the video, entitled «A Message to America," said Foley was killed in revenge for airstrikes against the IS rebels, approved by US President Barack Obama earlier this month.

The FBI currently believes that a video showing the beheading of US journalist James Foley by Islamic State (IS) militants is authentic. Foley’s family confirmed his death.
