MOSCOW, August 11 (RIA Novosti) - Rwanda’s health officials placed a patient allegedly infected with the Ebola virus in quarantine, said a statement on the website of the Rwandan government.

“Today late in the afternoon, a patient at King Faisal Hospital with Ebola-like symptoms has been put in isolation as we wait for his test results,” the statement said.

The results of the tests are expected within 48 hours. The suspected case is a medical student from Europe, although his nationality is not specified.

According to the statement, it is the first Ebola-related case in Rwanda since the recent outbreak of the disease. The Ministry of Health urged the public to remain calm, as all the necessary preventive measures were in place. The situation is being closely monitored by health workers.

There is no licensed treatment for the Ebola virus at present. However, recently two US aid workers, infected with the virus, responded positively to experimental serum ZMapp that had never been tested on people before. Some groups have called for the medicine to be given to West African countries where Ebola is spreading.

The Ebola virus is transmitted through direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of the infected. Symptoms of the disease include sudden onset of fever, weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat followed by vomiting, diarrhea, rash, kidney and liver problems, and in some cases, both internal and external bleeding.
