Nigeria Confirms Five New Ebola Cases

Nigerian authorities on Wednesday reported five new confirmed cases of the deadly Ebola virus in Lagos, Agence France-Presse reported Wednesday, quoting Nigerian Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu.

MOSCOW, August 6 (RIA Novosti) – Nigerian authorities on Wednesday reported five new confirmed cases of the deadly Ebola virus in Lagos, Agence France-Presse reported Wednesday, quoting Nigerian Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu.

"Nigeria has now recorded seven confirmed cases of Ebola Virus Disease," the minister said.

Last month, a Liberian citizen died of Ebola shortly after arriving at Lagos Airport. His doctor also died.

As the death toll in the outbreak of the lethal virus continues to rise, the World Health Organization said it would hold a meeting of its emergency committee on Wednesday and Thursday to assess the threat of a with a global emergency.

The new Ebola outbreak, the deadliest to date, was first registered in Guinea in February and it soon spilled over into Sierra Leone and Liberia. The WHO has updated its estimates of the number of cases and the current death toll 1,603 and 887 respectively.
