JERUSALEM, October 9 (RIA Novosti) – The new Palestinian unity government, which is holding its first-ever cabinet session today, represents all spectra of Palestinians, Shawki Aleessa, Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Social Affairs, told International Information Agency Rossiya Segodnya Thursday.

"The new government is a government of all Palestinians," Aleessa said in a telephone interview, adding that there are different spectra of the Palestinian people that are calling for urgent solutions.

According to Aleessa, overall success must be achieved with respect to all issues, especially in Gaza.

The new Fatah-Hamas reconciliation government, formed between the rival Palestinian movements in June, is convening a cabinet session for the first time on Thursday in the residence of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the Gaza Strip.

In late September, officials from the Fatah and Hamas movements met in the Egyptian capital Cairo to settle a long-standing dispute on the range of powers vested in Palestine's national unity government in a bid to increase its efficiency.

In April, Hamas and Fatah reached a deal for the first time in seven years to create a united government and hold general elections. Hamas has held power in the Gaza Strip since 2007, while Fatah has been holding sway in the West Bank.

Palestinians seek the creation of an independent state on the territories of the West Bank in East Jerusalem, partially occupied by Israel, and the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, and want Israel to withdraw from the Palestinian territories it took after the 1967 war.
