MOSCOW, September 22 (RIA Novosti) – Direct Israeli-Palestinian talks to discuss extension of ceasefire in the Gaza Strip will resume in the Egyptian capital Cairo Tuesday, Palestinian Authority (PA) Ambassador to Russia Fayed Mustafa told RIA Novosti Monday.

“It was agreed to continue Israeli-Palestinian talks in Cairo on September 23. Our delegation will be in Cairo today,” the ambassador said.

On August 26, Israel and Palestinian armed groups agreed on a ceasefire following 50 days of military operations by Israel targeting the Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip. According to UN estimates, over 2,100 Palestinians and 71 Israelis have been killed in the conflict.

Under the ceasefire deal brokered by the Egyptian government and concluded between Israel and Palestinian Authority, Israel agreed to open its border crossings to allow humanitarian aid and construction materials to enter Gaza.

Moscow welcomed the ceasefire deal, but insisted on the restarting of talks on the establishment of an independent state of Palestine.
