Australia will provide additional 15 million Australian dollars ($13.1 million) for people in need of humanitarian assistance in Iraq and Syria, the country's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced Wednesday.

MOSCOW, October 22 (RIA Novosti) - Australia will provide additional 15 million Australian dollars ($13.1 million) for people in need of humanitarian assistance in Iraq and Syria, the country's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced Wednesday.

"With winter approaching, displaced people in both countries are at risk of exposure to harsh weather, particularly those residing in unfinished buildings, crowded camps or in the open," Bishop was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

Australia plans to provide $8.7 million to various organizations in Iraq and $4.4 million - in Syria.

The country has so far donated a total of $119 million in Syria since the beginning of the internal conflict in 2011. Almost $15 million have been transferred for humanitarian assistance in Iraq since June.

Apart from providing humanitarian aid to Syria and Iraq, Australia is a member of the US-led international coalition against the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization.

Australian fighter jets began hitting targets inside Iraq earlier in October. It was reported that Australia had dispatched six Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighter jets to Iraq.
