MOSCOW, October 16 (RIA Novosti) - A civilian and a Polish army officer have been arrested in Poland under suspicion of spying for a foreign state, a Polish official said Thursday.

"There are two cases. One of them is being examined by the Office of the District Military Prosecutor in Warsaw since one of the detainees holds military status. The second [case] which has been taken by the Warsaw Appeals Prosecutor's Office concerns a civilian," Prosecutor General Andrzej Seremet told TVP 1 broadcaster.

Both are suspected of "harming Poland's interests," Seremet said, adding that at this point the investigators are still trying to determine the motivation of the detainees and are reviewing the evidence.

Polish media have reported that the detained civilian is a Russian-Polish lawyer, adding that the two suspects are connected with Russian intelligence. However this information has not come from the prosecutors themselves.

The Russian embassy in Warsaw declined to comment on the news to RIA Novosti earlier, referring to the unconfirmed media reports.

Defense Minister Tomasz Siemoniak tweeted that Wednesday was "an important day in the fight for purity in the Polish army," saying that besides spying, a drug-dealing ring had also been cracked.
