MOSCOW, October 14 (RIA Novosti) - Afghanistan's Ministry of Defense (MoD) confirmed on Tuesday that 12 Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers died during clashes in the country's Sar-e-Pul province with another 18 injured, Khaama Press reported.

The ANA soldiers were attacked by Taliban militants in the village of Laghman in the Kohistanat district. The wounded were transported to hospital after additional forces were deployed against the militants, the newspaper reported, citing the MoD spokesman, Gen. Zahir Azimi. The clash began on Sunday evening and ended late Monday afternoon.

A number of Taliban militants are also said to have sustained injuries in the conflict, according to Khaama Press. The Taliban has not commented on the incident.

Previous reports by local officials put the number of soldiers and police killed in the attack at 22.

The Sar-e-Pul province is considered one of the most active provinces in northern Afghanistan due to its many anti-government militant groups, which often carry out insurgency attacks in the area.
