MOSCOW, October 14 (RIA Novosti) – A 7.4-magnitude earthquake has occurred off the southern coast of El Salvador, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported Tuesday.

The earthquake took place at 03:51 GMT on Tuesday, USGS said.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 64 kilometers (40 miles) south of the city of Intipuca at a depth of 70.5 kilometers (43.8 miles).

No immediate information on casualties or damage was provided.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) originally issued a tsunami threat warning in connection with the quake, but later said that "there is no longer a tsunami threat from this earthquake".

"Based on all data available to this center…the tsunami threat from this earthquake has now mostly passed. Any remaining threat should be evaluated by local authorities in impacted areas," PTWC said.

"Minor sea level fluctuations may occur in coastal areas near the earthquake over the next few hours…and continuing for up to several hours," PTWC added.

Earthquakes of a 6.0 magnitude and above are considered strong and can lead to human casualties and the destruction of infrastructure.

According to USGS, moderately sized intermediate-depth earthquakes have been common in the region since 1900.
