Mexico Government Searching for Almost 60 Students After Protest

The authorities of the Mexican state of Guerrero are searching for 58 students that have gone missing following a protest at the end of last week, the state government reported.

MEXICO CITY, September 29 (RIA Novosti) - The authorities of the Mexican state of Guerrero are searching for 58 students that have gone missing following a protest at the end of last week, the state government reported.

Earlier it was reported that students in the city of Iguala were dissatisfied with the educational reforms, which led to a protest being staged. According to the investigators, a group of policemen, accompanied by unidentified armed people, cracked down on the protesters at around midnight on Friday.

The reasons behind the crackdown remain unknown. Six people were killed and seven were injured as a result of the violence.

The Prosecutor's Office and the Armed Forces have arrested 22 policemen, with Guerrero's Public Security Ministry conducting the search for the missing students.

It was initially confirmed that that the students were not arrested either by the police or the Armed Forces and were not found in hospitals.

A helicopter was deployed to assist with the search operation, which has also seen the relatives and friends of the missing students joining in.
