GLASGOW, September 24 (RIA Novosti), Mark Hirst – The former Scottish Labour Party leader and First Minister of Scotland, Henry McLeish, has issued a warning to his party that they are in danger of dying out in Scotland unless it establishes its own identity, separate from the Labour Party in England.
In an interview with the Daily Record newspaper Wednesday McLeish said, "Labour needs a review, not of leadership, but of the wider movement.
"What do we stand for now? How do we explain that? We need full autonomy from UK Labour so we can have a clear identity," he added.
McLeish also said that the UK's Labour leader had set a different agenda south of the border to that needed in Scotland. "Ed Miliband's Labour is fighting for English votes on different issues," McLeish said.
McLeish's comments come as new analysis of the Scottish independence referendum results showed that 51 percent of Scottish born voters, a majority, had backed Scottish independence at last Thursday's historic referendum.
The analysis, conducted by polling company YouGov, also showed 74 percent of voters resident in Scotland when the referendum took place, but who had been born outside Scotland, had voted against Scottish independence.
Anyone over the age of 16 years and resident in Scotland at the time of the referendum was eligible to vote.
Scottish voters took part in a referendum on independence last Thursday (September 18) and opted by a margin of 55 percent to 45 percent (2,001,926 votes to 1,617,989) to remain part of the UK.
