MOSCOW, September 9 (RIA Novosti) - A Nigerian woman resident in Italy, who recently travelled to Nigeria has been hospitalized with suspected Ebola, Italian newspaper La Stampa reported Tuesday.

A forty-year-old woman was placed in an isolated ward in a local hospital in the eastern Italian city of Ancona. According to La Stampa, she spent a week in her homeland, Nigeria, and then returned to Italy, where she permanently resides.

The worst Ebola outbreak in history started in February in Guinea and quickly spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

Ebola has a fatality rate of nearly 90 percent. The virus is transmitted through direct contact with the blood, body fluids or tissue of infected animals or people. Symptoms of the disease include the sudden onset of fever, weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat followed by vomiting, diarrhea, rash, kidney and liver problems, and in some cases, both internal and external bleeding.

The latest outbreak has already claimed 2296 lives, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates. More than 4,200 cases have been recorded.

The number of people affected by the virus could rise to 20,000 before the virus is brought under control, the WHO states.

There is no officially approved medication for the Ebola virus, and experts claim prevention is the only cure. Several countries, including Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Japan are currently working on vaccines.
