TOKYO, September 7 (RIA Novosti) – The number of dengue fever cases in Japan has reached 74, the Kyodo news agency reported Sunday.

Earlier it was reported that 67 people had contracted the disease, which had spread across 12 different prefectures in Japan. All of the affected individuals were in stable condition.

The first cases of dengue fever were registered in Japan at the end of August, for the first time in nearly 70 years. The majority of affected individuals visited Tokyo’s Yoyogi Park, where they are believed to have been bitten by mosquitoes infected with the dangerous virus.

Dengue fever, which often spreads in tropical and subtropical areas in Asia, Latin America and Africa, is transmitted by tiger and dengue mosquitoes.

Symptoms usually include mild fever, headaches, vomiting and muscle pain.

Fifty to 100 million people living in tropical or subtropical areas become infected with dengue fever each year.

The disease cannot be transmitted directly from person to person.
