MOSCOW, September 4 (RIA Novosti) – A separate crime unit is urgently needed to protect the UK’s food industry, claims the official report published on Thursday on the UK government’s website.
“A food crime unit is urgently needed to protect our food industry and consumers from criminal activity, but it will repay investment by protecting the majority of businesses who work hard to provide safe and authentic food for UK consumers”, the report states.
The author of the report Professor Chris Elliott, director of the Institute for Global Food Security at Queen’s University, Belfast believes that the systems he recommends will help lift some existing burdens, especially from small businesses.
Prof. Elliot was commissioned to write the report after a horsemeat scandal erupted in January 2013 when frozen burgers and lasagne throughout the UK and Ireland were discovered to contain horsemeat instead of beef.
