Russian diplomats are soon going to visit the son of Russian lawmaker, who stands accused of hacking by the US government, and seek his transfer to the general regime, Russian Consul General in Seattle, Andrey Yushmanov told RIA Novosti.

WASHINGTON, August 23 (RIA Novosti) - Russian diplomats will soon visit the son of a Russian lawmaker, who stands accused of hacking by the US government and seek his transfer to general prison population, Russian Consul General in Seattle, Andrey Yushmanov told RIA Novosti.

"The administration of the detention facility, where he [Roman Seleznev] remains in custody, has agreed to grant us another consular visit, to check if anything changed in his conditions of confinement. At the latest court session, the lawyers proposed transferring Roman from the special unit into the general regime. So that he could have daily walks and access to a phone, all of the rights guaranteed to him in this situation," Yushmanov said.

A week ago, the court refused to make an immediate judgment on Seleznev’s transfer to general population.

"Nevertheless, he [the judge] ruled that if it is not done within seven days, he will make a formal request, oblige the administration of the detention facility to provide written arguments as to why they do not transfer Roman to general regime. This seven-day term is about to expire, and so we have planned for a consular visit," the diplomat said.

Roman Seleznev, the son of a Russian State Duma lawmaker Valery Seleznev, was detained on July 5 at an airport in the Maldives and flown to the US island of Guam.

Seleznev’s defense asked for his release, saying that the Russian citizen was illegally detained outside US jurisdiction.

The prosecution disagreed, saying Seleznev was arrested in Guam, but did not explain how he got there from the Maldives.

Seleznev faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of bank fraud, while the other charges also carry significant sentences.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called the incident an unfriendly move by the United States and a de facto kidnapping, while the government of the Maldives promised to review the legal framework leading up to Seleznev’s arrest.
