MOSCOW, August 18 (RIA Novosti) - Eliot Engel, the ranking member of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, said that Washington may launch a ground operation in Iraq to fight Islamic State (IS) militants, The Hill reported Sunday.
“Ultimately, we may have some boots on the ground there,” Engel said.
The politician added that he is not an advocate of such measures but there are no easy choices in the situation.
The Sunni group Islamic State previously fighting in Syria and formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) seized large parts of Iraq in early June, ratcheting up tensions in the region. In late June, the Islamic State announced the establishment of a caliphate on the territories it had captured in Iraq and Syria.
