China Sends Experts to West Africa to Help Fight Ebola

China has sent three teams of experts to the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone in order to fight the rapidly spreading Ebola virus, Xinhua news agency reported Wednesday.

MOSCOW, August 13 (RIA Novosti) - China has sent three teams of experts to the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone in order to fight the rapidly spreading Ebola virus, Xinhua news agency reported Wednesday.

“A team of three Chinese medical workers arrived in Sierra Leone's capital Freetown on late Tuesday to help the country fight against the deadliest-ever Ebola virus which has claimed over 1,000 lives in West African countries,” the news agency said, citing the unnamed medical sources.

According to the statement, the first team of Chinese experts arrived in Guinea on Monday, and the team, sent to Liberia, is expected to start working “soon.”

On August 7, the Chinese Commerce Ministry announced that China would also provide $4.9 million worth of humanitarian aid to the African countries hit by the deadly virus.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the current Ebola outbreak has already claimed 1,013 lives, the vast majority in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The head of the WHO, Margaret Chan urged the international community to provide Ebola-hit countries with all possible assistance.
