MOSCOW, August 6 (RIA Novosti) - The death toll from an earthquake in southern China has risen to 589 people, China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs reported Wednesday.
About 2,400 people were injured and over 240,000 were evacuated. Tens of thousands of homes have been destroyed or seriously damaged, the ministry said on its website.
The 6.5 magnitude quake struck the southwestern Yunnan province of Ludian county on Sunday. The earthquake occurred 29 kilometers (18 miles) from Zhaotong city at 16:30 local time (08:30 GMT). It is said to be the China’s deadliest earthquake in four years.
