The European Union has demonstrated the first signs of thinking over an “exit strategy” from the current anti-Russian sanctions, Russia’s EU envoy Vladimir Chizhov said Friday.

BRUSSELS, August 1 (RIA Novosti) – The European Union has demonstrated the first signs of thinking over an “exit strategy” from the current anti-Russian sanctions, Russia’s EU envoy Vladimir Chizhov said Friday.

“Alas, serious problems in our relations have already become reality. We did not make these problems, but we will have to solve them sooner or later. I think that [EU members] realize this. There are even the first signs of what is called ‘exit strategy’ as well,” Chizhov said.

The Russian envoy said the European Union is unlikely to further expand the economic sanctions against Russia that came into force Friday this month.

Earlier on Friday, the diplomat said Russia was ready to cooperate with the European Union whenever it was ready. Russia and EU members have several joint projects, the work on which is hampered by the sanctions imposed by the European Union against Russia.

On Wednesday, the European Commission added the names of eight Russian individuals and three entities targeted by the sanctions over their alleged role in the escalation of the Ukrainian crisis. The overall numbers of Russian individuals and companies affected by the EU sanctions are currently 95 and 23, respectively.

The first round of sanctions against Russia was implemented by the United States and the European Union in March in response to Crimea’s reunification with Russia following a referendum. Moscow has repeatedly said that the measures are counterproductive.
