MOSCOW, July 15 (RIA Novosti) – Washington welcomes Israel’s decision to accept Egypt’s proposal to a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, Marie Harf, deputy spokeswoman for the US State Department said Tuesday.
“We welcome the Israeli cabinet's decision to accept it. We urge all other parties to accept the proposal,” she posted on her official Twitter page.
Harf expressed hope that this was an opportunity to restore peace in the region.
“The Egyptian proposal for a ceasefire and negotiations provides an opportunity to end the violence and restore calm,” she said in another post.
Having agreed to a ceasefire, the Israeli government noted that they would resume their Protective Edge operation, if the Palestinian side continued their attacks.
On July 8, the Israeli Army launched a large-scale operation against Gaza Strip militants in response to continued shelling.
Hamas has not yet replied to Egypt’s proposal.
