MOSCOW, May 27 (RIA Novosti) – Greenpeace activists blocked Gazprom’s chartered Saturn drilling platform in the Dutch port of Ijmuiden to prevent it from going into the Arctic shelf, according to the Tuesday message on the activists’ website.

“Divers chained the support beams of the platform to prevent it from moving. They also unfurled a banner over it reading “Save the Arctic”. Today the platform was supposed to be towed to the port of Rotterdam to be loaded onto a ship and transported to the drilling site - the Gazprom Dolginskoye deposit in the Pechora Sea,” the statement said.

Earlier in September 2013, the activists managed to attract attention when they tried to climb onto the platform of Gazprom on the Prirazlomnoe field: the ship of foreign environmentalists was arrested, with a criminal case on piracy launched against them. Then case was then reclassified, and the environmentalists were pardoned some time later.

Today's protest action event was attended by about 30 activists from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
