MOSCOW, May 26 (RIA Novosti) – Flights in and out of the international airport in Donetsk in eastern Ukraine have been halted indefinitely, an announcement on the airport’s website said.
“The Donetsk Airport is temporarily putting on hold all flight services starting 7:00 a.m. [4:00 a.m. GMT]. The restart of services will be announced in a separate message,” airport management said.
On Sunday, Ukraine went to the polls to vote in a new president. The election was carried out against a backdrop of deep political strife and a massive military crackdown on the country’s east that has killed scores of civilians.
A total of 21 candidates ran for president. The central elections commission was still counting the returns, but billionaire confectionary tycoon Petro Poroshenko is largely predicted to win the poll. He is currently supported by 54.6 percent of votes and 55 percent of respondents supported him in exit polls.
