Moscow welcomes the agreement between North and South Korea to reopen the Kaesong industrial park, which can serve as a basis for the resolution of other issues between the two countries, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

MOSCOW, August 15 (RIA Novosti) – Moscow welcomes the agreement between North and South Korea to reopen the Kaesong industrial park, which can serve as a basis for the resolution of other issues between the two countries, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

“We believe that, based on their ‘Kaesong experience,’ Pyongyang and Seoul will be able to establish effective dialogue on other current problems as well,” the ministry said in a statement posted on its website.

The two Koreas also agreed Wednesday to “internationalize” Kaesong by hosting foreign investors.

That will help ease tensions, strengthen security and promote an atmosphere of trust and collaboration on the Korean Peninsula, the Russian ministry said.

The reopening date for the industrial park, which has been idle since early April, has not been named yet. A joint committee will be established to supervise the operation of the industrial area and related issues.

The move comes after months of high tensions on the peninsula following the North’s third nuclear test in February and its threats of launching nuclear attacks against South Korea and Washington.

In April, Pyongyang halted all operations at Kaesong and pulled out all of its 53,000 staff who were working for South Korean companies in the area.
