At least six people were killed and over 40 injured after a passenger bus plunged about 300 meters (985 feet) into a ravine in the northwest of Bolivia, FM Bolivia radio station reported.

The bus was en route to the city of La Paz, when it fell off the cliff near the village of Yerbani, located about 60 km (37 miles) from the city.

“Four men and two women were killed. Over 40 people were hospitalized with three of them in critical condition,” a local traffic police chief told the radio station.

Almost three months ago a passenger bus full of teenagers also crashed near the current site of the accident, killing 16 and injuring over 30 youngsters.

According to the International Automobile Federation, some 1,000 people die in road accidents in Bolivia annually, while 50,000 receive injuries.

In 2010 President Evo Morales’ administration passed a legislature that clamped down on bus drivers caught working drunk or in excessive hours, as well as on inexperienced drivers, in order to reduce the number of traffic accidents.
