Five people were killed and about 30 injured in a car bomb blast in the Jaramana neighborhood of Damascus, the third in the past week, the Al-Mayadeen TV reported on Monday.
This is the third blast in the predominantly Christian suburb of the Syrian capital since August 27, when at least two people were killed. The following day, at least 12 were killed when twin blasts hit a funeral procession for victims of the first blast.
Syrian authorities and state media gave no death count, saying only there were women and children among those injured.
State new agency SANA blamed the blast on an “armed terrorist group.”
Until recently, the mixed-religion Jaramana area was viewed as one of the safest districts in Damascus and a haven for people displaced by the ongoing civil conflict in Syria.
The Syrian conflict has claimed up to 20,000 lives, according to estimates by various Syrian opposition groups. The West is pushing for President Bashar al-Assad’s ouster, while Russia and China are trying to prevent outside interference in Syria, saying the Assad regime and the opposition are both to blame for the bloodshed.
