At least 11 people were killed and 40 were injured as a truck’s brakes failed in Peru, the RPP radio quoted an official as saying.

“Ten people died on the site, another passenger died in a hospital,” it quoted the head of Capillas District, Rolando Campos, as saying.

The driver of the truck carrying people tried to prevent it from falling into a precipice. As a result, his vehicle crashed into a hill 200 km (124 miles) southeast of the country’s capital Lima and overturned.

“Forty passengers, including nine children, have been hospitalized,” Campos said on the radio.

According to official data, some 3,000 people die and 50,000 are injured annually in traffic accidents in Peru. The annual losses to the country’s economy from the accidents total $1 billion.

The poor condition of roads and vehicles, as well as poor driving manners of local residents, are believed to be the key reasons for car accidents in Peru.
