At least 11 Afghan civilians were injured on Wednesday in a Taliban attack in the Khost province of Afghanistan, local media reported.

According to Bakhtar News, two suspected Taliban militants threw grenades at a crowd of Afghan employees who gathered in front of the gate of a NATO base in Sahrabagh district of Khost city.

The news agency cited local health authorities as saying three of the injured were in critical condition.

Meanwhile, U.S. troops in northern Kunduz province of Afghanistan shot dead a suspected suicide bomber on Wednesday before he could detonate his explosives while attempting to approach a bus carrying 50 Afghan policemen, Khaama Press on-line newspaper said.

The attacks on Wednesday come a day after at least 54 people were killed and over a hundred injured in a series of deadly Taliban suicide bombings across the country.

Experts believe that the recent spike in Taliban activity is aimed at proving that Afghan domestic security forces are weak and will not be able to hold off the militant onslaught after NATO troops withdraw from Afghanistan by the end of 2014, handing over responsibility for security in the war-torn country to local police and military.
