Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for “a strong and credible military threat” in order to force Iran to stop its nuclear program.

Netanyahu, who met on Sunday with the U.S. republican presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, said that “all the sanctions and diplomacy so far have not set back the Iranian program by one iota.”

“We need a strong and credible military threat coupled with sanctions to have a chance to change that situation,” Netanyahu told Romney.

Tehran which reiterates that its nuclear program is of the peaceful nature, is under several packages of Western-backed sanctions, including EU-brokered oil embargo that came into effect on July 1.

Romney, who arrived in Israel on Saturday as part of his foreign policy trip ahead of November’s U.S. presidential elections, said that he viewed Israel’s stance on Iran “with great seriousness.”

Earlier on Sunday, the republican candidate’s foreign policy adviser Dan Senor said that Romney would back Israeli attack on Iran.

“If Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing the capability, the governor would respect that decision,” Senor said.
