All of the 2,000 French combat troops will leave Afghanistan by the end of the current year, French President Francois Hollande said on Friday.

“More than 2,000 troops will leave the country by the end of the year. This is a very important organizational and logistic task,” he said during a meeting with servicemen in Afghanistan.

Some of France’s total 3,300 troops will stay behind to help send military equipment back to France, as well as train the Afghan Army and police, the president said.

"The time for Afghan sovereignty has come," he said. "The terrorist threat that targeted our territory, while it hasn't totally disappeared, is in part lessened."
