Florence Green, the last known service member of World War I, died in King's Lynn, Norfolk, two weeks before her 111th birthday, BBC reported.

“She died in her sleep on Saturday night at Briar House care home,” BBC said.

Green served as a mess steward at RAF bases in Marham and Narborough. She was 17 years old when she joined the Women's Royal Air Force (WRAF), created to free up men for active service.

Green is survived by three children, four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Green was recognized as the world's last known World War I veteran after the 2011 death of Briton Claude Choules, thought to be the last known WWI combat veteran. He also was 110 years of age.

The last three World War I veterans living in the UK - Bill Stone, Henry Allingham and Harry Patch - all died in 2009.
