A passenger ferry with 1,200 people on board caught on fire on Thursday in the Red Sea , the Egypt-based Al Ahram news website reported.

The ferry, crossing between the Jordanian port of Aqaba and Egypt’s Nuweiba, is carrying about 1,200 passengers, mainly Egyptian nationals.

The fire sparked in the garage bay soon after the ferry left Aqaba, rescuers said. The bay has reportedly been totally destroyed by the fire.

Egypt’s transport minister, Ali Zain Al Abidin, said that 75 percent of the fire was put out and evacuation of the passengers is under way and that none of the passengers were injured.
