Libya's deposed leader Muammar Gaddafi has said he will carry on fighting, in an audio message aired on a loyalist TV channel on Thursday.

Gaddafi urged his supporters to continue fighting "foreign aggression" and said his enemies were divided, in a message carried by the Syria-based al-Rai channel.

"The Libyan people cannot surrender. We are not women, we will not give in," Gaddafi said.

The message comes on the 42nd anniversary of a coup that overthrew King Idris and brought him to power.

"Let there be a long fight and let Libya be engulfed in flames," the toppled leader said.

Meanwhile, the rebels have surrounded Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte.

Despite earlier threatening to start a full-blown assault on the town on Saturday, pro-Gaddafi forces have been given an extra week to negotiate a settlement.

Diplomats from about 60 countries are meeting in Paris on Thursday to discuss Libya's future.

The rebels' National Transitional Council is now in control of most of the country, with just a few pockets of resistance remaining from forces loyal to Gaddafi.
