Iran has started moving uranium enrichment centrifuges from its nuclear facility in the central city of Natanz to the Fordo nuclear site in the country's north, Press TV reported on Monday.

"Transferring the centrifuges of the Natanz site to Fordo is underway with full observance of security standards," state broadcaster IRIB quoted Iran's chief nuclear official Fereydoun Abbasi as saying on Sunday.

Abbasi said the facilities of the Fordo nuclear enrichment plant, the country's second uranium enrichment site, are being prepared and some centrifuges have already been transferred to Fordo.

He also said the first chain of a new generation of centrifuges "will soon be installed at the Fordo."

In June, Abbasi, who heads the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), said Tehran will transfer its 20-percent uranium enrichment activities to Fordo, which is located near the city of Qom.

The West suspects Iran of pursuing a secret nuclear weapons program, but the Islamic republic, which is under international sanctions over its nuclear activities, insists it needs nuclear power solely for civilian purposes.
