The participants of the NATO-Russian Council meeting in Sochi have discussed the current situation in Libya, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told journalists on Monday.

"This is justified because the strategic conception accepted by NATO recently says that NATO will respect international law and the decisions [made] by the UN Security Council. And since NATO has taken upon itself to fulfill UN Security Council Resolution 1973 on Libya, we exchanged opinions on how strict the norms of international law are being followed, which includes the Security Council's decisions in fulfilling the Allied Defense operation," Lavrov said.

Libya has been rocked with anti-Gaddafi protests since mid-February. The international military operation began on March 19 following a UN resolution and was extended until late September.

UN Security Council Resolution 1970, passed in February, prohibited states from providing any kind of arms to Libya. March Resolution 1973 authorized nations "to take all necessary measures" to help protect Libyan civilians.
