Floods and landslides have killed a total of 611 people in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro, the country's civil defense authority said in its latest casualty report on Sunday.

With 274 and 263 victims reported, the cites of Nova Friburgo and Teresopolis were hardest hit by the disaster. Casualties were also recorded in other settlements, namely Petropolis and Sumidouro, located in the same mountainous area some 100 km north of the capital.

Rescuers have been struggling to reach some remote locations since the country's worst storm in decades hit the state on Tuesday.

No casualties among foreign tourists have been reported.

The Russian consulate general in Rio de Janeiro said it received no reports about Russians who could possibly be in the disaster zone.
