40 people were killed and 12 were injured when a train collided with a passenger bus in the central Ukrainian Dnipropetrovsk region, Ukrainian Prime Minister, Mykola Azarov, said on Tuesday.
"Many of the injured are in a critical condition, so the death toll could increase," the spokesman for the Ukrainian Interior Ministry, Dmitry Andreev, said.
The accident occurred when the bus driver drove onto the railroad, despite a warning from a railroad traffic control signal, a local traffic police statement said.
The local emergency services said the train was travelling between the towns of Krivoy Rog and Zaporozhye. The accident occurred near the town of Marganets.
According to preliminary information, the passenger bus was carrying around 50 passengers.
