The head of the UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti is missing and may be lying under the rubble of the organization's Port-au-Prince headquarters after a powerful quake hit the island.
Two earthquakes measuring 7 and 5.9 on the Richter scale hit Haiti on Tuesday, with hundreds feared dead.
"We haven't heard from Mr. [Hedi] Annabi. We just know that he was in the [headquarters] building, as were many others," under-secretary-general for peacekeeping operations Alain Le Roy said on Tuesday.
He said no figures on casualties were currently available, but described the quakes as "a tragedy for Haiti, and a tragedy for the UN."
Earlier reports said there were 10 Russians among the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).
