BUENOS AIRES, November 11 (RIA Novosti) - Police in Peru have seized about 350 kilograms of cocaine in the mountains to the northeast of Lima, being transported by mules, the Radio programas del Peru radio station reported.
"The drugs were transported from the Monzon District where coca plantations are located, to the Pacific coast for export," Teddy Bartra Arevalo, director of Peru's police drug enforcement unit, or Dirandro, told the radio station.
He said the caravan of eight mules was stopped in the mountains of the Huanuco Region.
"It was led by armed criminals, five of whom were arrested," he said.
According to the official, the offenders are militants from the Sendero Luminoso (Shining Way) Maoist group.
Peru is one of South America's main cocaine producers along with Bolivia and Columbia.
