MEXICO CITY, October 12 (RIA Novosti) - The unpublished author of a horror novel entitled "Cannibalistic Instincts" has been arrested in Mexico City on charges of cannibalism, local media reported on Friday.

In an official announcement to the press, a Mexico City Attorney General spokesman said Jose Luis Calva had been arrested on Monday near his home in the capital's Guerrero neighborhood. He added that the writer had attempted to flee the scene, but had been run over by a car. He was still in hospital on Thursday.

Police had initially called on Calva in connection with the disappearance of his girlfriend, Alejandra Galeana, a local pharmacy employee.

Body parts, reportedly belonging to the writer's ex-girlfriend, were subsequently found in Calva's fridge by police.

Local media sources also reported that police discovered many other human remains during a search of Calva's living quarters, including a frying pan full of human flesh and human bones stuffed into a cereal box.

In his first statement after being arrested, Calva told police he was a great admirer of Hannibal Lector, the character portrayed by British actor Anthony Hopkins in a series of movies based on novels by Thomas Harris. Calva is also reported to have been a screenplay writer, specializing in horror. None of his efforts have so far been adapted for the big screen.

The ancient Aztecs, who lived in central Mexico between 14th- 16th AD, are said to have widely practiced cannibalism.
