NEW DELHI, October 5 (RIA Novosti) - Indian strategic forces have successfully tested a nuclear-capable Agni A-I short-range ballistic missile, India's Defense Ministry said Friday.
The statement said the launch was performed at 10:35 local time (5:05 a.m. GMT) in Chandipur, in the eastern state of Orissa. The missile range is reported to be 700 km (435 miles).
It was the fourth launch of the Agni A-1 missile. The previous three launches were carried out in 2002, 2003, and 2004.
The one-stage Agni-I is the smallest missile in the Agni series and can be launched from a mobile carrier.
The Agni-II two-stage medium-range missile has a range of 2,500 km (1,242 miles).
The long-range Agni-III, the heaviest in the series, can deliver a nuclear warhead to a target located 3,500 kms (1,864 miles) away.
