KRASNODAR, Russia, November 13 (R-Sport) - Jurgen Klinsmann says he wants to use a new generation of talented Americans to turn the U.S. national team into an attractive, attacking unit.
Klinsmann is set to try out fringe players when his side take on Russia in the southern city of Krasnodar on Wednesday.
"One step at a time we are trying to play a more attacking, more technical game so that we hopefully in the future are able to play with the best teams in the world," Klinsmann said.
"We have already made some steps forward," said former German international striker, pointing to recent 1-0 wins over Italy and Mexico.
"Little by little, we're trying to get to another level. ... We discover talent all over the world with duel citizenship."
"It's a new picture that the U.S. is facing compared to 10 or 15 years ago, and that's very exciting for us.
Klinsmann, like his Russia counterpart Fabio Capello, is using the game to blood youngsters into the side.
And Capello's men, currently ninth in the FIFA world rankings, are more than worthy opponents, he said.
"It's a fantastic opportunity to play against one of the top teams of the continent. We are really looking forward to it."
Klinsmann has opted to leave out experienced forwards Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey, blaming a packed fixture list, although he recalled striker Jozy Altidore, who could win his 52nd cap.
Nurnberg defender Timmy Chandler returns to the U.S. setup after a year out amid uncertainty over whether he will commit to the U.S. or to Germany, whose nationality he also holds.
Chandler, 22, is still free to choose, as he has not yet played a competitive senior international, but has made eight friendly appearances for the U.S.
Klinsmann could also hand first caps to wingers Joshua Gatt and Joseph Gyau in Russia on Wednesday. Capello has indicated he will debut some of the six uncapped players in his 22-man squad.
"You need to give young players opportunities to play and get experience so they build confidence," Klinsmann said.
The entire 20-man U.S. squad trained in Krasnodar on Tuesday and appeared fit ahead of the match, during a portion of the session open to media.
