Spartak Moscow's Brazilian midfielder Romulo looks set to miss the rest of the season after suffering a serious knee injury in Sunday's 3-1 Russian Premier League win over FC Rostov, his club said.

The 22-year-old international was carried off in the 85th minute after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament and partially rupturing his posterior and lateral ligaments.

He received the injury upon landing awkwardly on the artificial pitch at Luzhniki Stadium from an aerial challenge with Rostov defender Isaac Okoronkwo.

Spartak’s captain Sergei Parshivlyuk suffered a similar injury in July.

Knee ligament injuries usually leave players sidelined for at least six months, and have been known to wipe out entire seasons; in some cases end careers.

Romulo signed from Vasco da Gama in July, and in his seven games had already become an integral part of Unai Emery's side.

He scored on his debut in the 2-1 victory over Rubin Kazan, and his second came in their plucky Champions League defeat to Barcelona 3-2 on Wednesday.

Romulo was a part of Brazil Olympic team that won silver in London.
