A Russian martial arts champion is wanted by police in connection with an incident at a beach resort that left a man dead, a local department of the Ukrainian police said Wednesday.

Stanislav Molodtsov, who has reportedly won titles in the martial arts of sambo and pankration, is suspected of causing serious injuries to a member of the military who later died in hospital.

The incident is alleged to have taken place at a bar in the seaside village of Andreevka near the Ukrainian city of Sevastopol in the Crimea.

“Stanislav Molodtsov, a multiple winner of sambo and pankration championships, caused serious bodily harm to a 24-year-old contracted serviceman,” a statement on the Sevastopol police website said.

The police did not name the victim, but said he was struck in the face, collapsed and lost consciousness before later dying in hospital.

Police said they suspected Molodtsov may attempt to leave Ukraine.

Another Russian martial arts champion, Rasul Mirzaev, is on trial in connection with the death of a 19-year-old student who died after Mirzaev punched him outside a Moscow nightclub last year, in a case which has garnered much media attention.

The case rests on whether the student, Ivan Agafonov, was killed by the punch or by striking his head on the sidewalk as he fell after he was struck.

According to some reports, Molodtsov appeared as a witness at Mirzaev’s trial.
