Romanian coach Dan Petrescu left Russian Premier League side FC Kuban just four games into the new season in order to seek new challenges, he told R-Sport on Wednesday.

Petrescu handed in his resignation to the club after his team's 2-1 derby win against FC Krasnodar on Friday and was allowed to leave by the board.

His departure only became official Tuesday.

Reports in the Russian media have linked the former Chelsea right-back with the vacant coaching job at Dynamo Moscow.

"At this stage I had to leave. It's important for me as a professional, and for the team," Petrescu said.

"We sometimes need changes, new challenges, and at moments like this the main thing is not to be afraid of them."

He added: "I gave Kuban everything I could."

Club president and regional governor Alexander Tkachev said on Twitter on Tuesday that Petrescu had been offered a job by another Russian team, but did not specify which.

Petrescu refused to comment on his future plans.

Petrescu, 44, earned praise in Russia for leading Kuban to promotion to the Premier League in 2010, his first season in charge.

Kuban finished eighth of 16 teams in the Premier League last season, surpassing all expectations and prompting Zenit coach Luciano Spalletti to call him "the breakthrough of the year".

He was also heavily linked to the CSKA Moscow job in May, although Leonid Slutsky remains in charge.
