Hungary's five-time world champion in various disciplines Danuta Kozak took Olympic gold in the women's kayak single on Thursday.

Kozak overtook defending Olympic champion Inna Osypenko-Radomska of Ukraine at the half way stage and held her lead to finish first in one minute, 51.456 seconds.

"I really cannot believe it," said Kozak, who was part of Wendesday's victorious kayak four team. "It was such a good race, I really didn't even see the others, just went as fast as I could. And at the finish line I looked around and nobody was around me. That feeling was incredible."

Osypenko-Radomska took silver in 1:52.685, with South Africa's Bridgitte Hartley just beating out Sweden's Sofia Paldanius for bronze in 1:52.923.

"Everybody has a chance to be a medallist. This time I won the silver, but next race I will try to get the gold," said Osypenko-Radomska, who enters the women's kayak single 200 meters sprint on Saturday.

"I can't have any emotions now."

Hartley, meanwhile, was exhausted.

"I need a holiday, definitely a holiday. My body needs one - so does my brain."

It was Hungary's second medal on the water Thursday after its men took silver in the kayak four final.
