Seventeen-year-old Russian racing prospect Daniil Kvyat is delighted to become the first Russian winner at the country's only world-class circuit, he said Saturday.

Kvyat held off a strong challenge from Belgium's Stoffel Vandoorne to win the 2.0 class of the Renault World Series on the first day of competition at the Moscow Raceway on Saturday.

"I'm very happy today," he said, adding that he had felt the pressure of the home crowd.

"It's very emotional you know and it's a bit of extra pressure as well," he said.

"They know that I'm Russian so they want me to deliver, and to win of course. The only thing that means to them is wins, so I do my best to do it."

Kvyat's trophy was presented to him by Formula One legend Alain Prost.

"He achieved a lot in the motorsport so of course it's a big pleasure for me to get a trophy from him," he said.

"Yeah, he's a four time world champion," the young Russian added when asked if Prost was a role model.

The result allowed Kvyat to close the gap at the top of the championship table to seven points from leader Vandoorne.
