Czech figure skater Michal Brezina has hired Viktor Petrenko, the former coach of Stephane Lambiel and Johnny Weir, and is to work with the Ukrainian from next season onwards.
Brezina, the 2011 Skate America champion, is looking to take his performances to the next level after a sixth-placed finish at the world championships in Nice, France, last month.
The 22 year old announced he was seeking to change his coaching setup then, and confirmed on his website that he was ending cooperation with longtime team of Petr Starec and Karel Fajfr.
"From the new season [I] will work with multiple European and World medalist and Olympic champion in 1992, Viktor Petrenko," the website said in a statement posted late Monday.
Brezina finished fourth at the 2010 and 2011 world championships, his top achievements on the global stage to date.
His new coach Petrenko was the first skater from the acclaimed Soviet school to win an Olympic gold medal in the men's competition, at the 1992 Albertville Games.
He is based in New Jersey and works as a technical specialist for the International Skating Union.
Petrenko and his wife Nina coached two-time world champion Lambiel for several months until the Swiss star retired through injury, and have coached Weir, a 2008 world bronze medalist since 2007.
