Spartak Moscow winger Aidan McGeady has flown home after sustaining an ankle injury at the club’s training camp in Spain, a club official said Wednesday.

The 25-year-old Glaswegian ruptured his ankle ligaments on Monday, but a hospital scan found that the injury was less severe than the ankle injury that kept him out for two months in 2011, the club said in a statement on its official website.

“Our worst fears were not confirmed,” the statement said.

The official, who asked not to be named because he was not authorized to speak on the subject, said McGeady had flown home and would only rejoin the team this weekend at their final training camp of the winter break in Marbella.

McGeady has scored five goals in 30 appearances since joining Spartak from Celtic in 2010 for a reported fee of 9.5 million pounds.

McGeady was born in Glasgow but chose to represent Ireland, and has picked up 46 caps since his full debut in 2004, scoring twice.

Spartak beat FC Copenhagen 1-0 on Tuesday in the final of the 12-team Copa del Sol in Alicante, Spain, to win its first trophy of any kind in eight years.

The Copa del Sol, played January 28 through February 7, included fellow Russian team Anzhi Makhachkala, Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk, four teams from Norway, two from Sweden, and one each from Slovenia and China.

Nine-time Russian champions Spartak's last silverware came in 2003 with the Russian Cup, beating Rostov 1-0 on a Yegor Titov goal.

Spartak are fourth with 57 points in the Premier League, which resumes March
