Russian and British Olympic officials signed a memorandum of understanding in Moscow on Wednesday to provide mutual assistance in delivering their respective Winter and Summer Games.

The president of the Russian Olympic Committee Alexander Zhukov signed the document along with British Olympic Associated chairman Colin Moynihan at a ceremony at the Russian government headquarters.

London is holding the 2012 Summer Games, while Russia will host the 2014 Winter Games in the southern Black Sea resort of Sochi.

“It’s really important that Russia and Britain have close contacts between the committees and federations for the best possible preparation for the Olympics,” Zhukov, also a deputy prime minister, said after the ceremony.

Moynihan said the partners would do “everything possible to ensure success of London and Sochi as Olympic capitals.”

The main benefit of the agreement is that it foresees the bodies sharing all kinds of information on administrative and competition practices, how best to exploit various sporting facilities, how best to train staff, and other key areas related to putting on a top-quality Games.

Olympic associations and committees frequently sign such accords to maintain key standards through the Olympic cycle.
